A fictionalised account of the the true story of Barbara Thompson [Idriess Thomson] shipwrecked on the cutter “America” on the reef at Horn island and only survivor. She swam to Prince of Wales Island and lived with the Kaurareg people for five years before being found by Captain Owen Stanley and a young Thomas Huxley who as a junior officer on board the exploring vessel Rattlesnake.

Published by Angus & Robertson 1936, a ninth edition issued one year after the first. The copy of Chicago resident, Idriess friend and admirer, Frances Van Cleef with a note indicating she acquired it in Melbourne on Feb 16, 1937.

Very good condition, a couple of chips to the dust jacket, very clean and tight internally. A super copy.

An impressive Idriess book about the Australian Mounted Police up through the Centre, the North and West. Many lively accounts recounted in the normal Idriess way. The photography in this book is special with a number of unique aboriginal images.

A first edition published by Cassell, Australia in 1964. Octavo, 171 pages, end paper maps and illustrated throughout with images from photographs by the author. A very good copy.

Seems rather strange today … as late as 1957 the first real contact was made with the Pintubi who live in the Gibson and Great Sandy Desert west of Alice Springs. This book is about the 1963 Patrol to locate them and find out more about them and their way of life. A sympathetic account with special images.

The Pintubi people .. their isolation and struggles to find foot and water.
