    A not at all dated history of the Atlantic .From early Viking days … then Columbus, Cabot, Drake, Raleigh etc. The great islands and Voyager’s favourite St Helena. And in the air … the Alcock and Brown non-stop 1919 from Newfoundland. Slavery. Whaling. The fierce battles of WWII. Quite a subject in one book.

    Published by Newnes, London in 1964 after the 1962 first. Tall octavo, 206 pages heavily illustrated. Very good condition and the best printing of a book published in a number of forms.

    A personal anthology by the Master Mariner. In chronological order with “The Build-up” … the opening sentence is “There were sailing ships at the bottom of our street – real sailing-ships, I mean – Cape Horners, four-masted barques, fully-rigged” …. love it!

    Then we are off with … “The Real Thing” and then “Steamships” and “Little Ships” and “War”.

    Bill King perhaps the greatest Submarine Commander ever, well the only one to survive the whole of WWII. Here, in 1973, he circumnavigates the world in his specially built junk-type rigged “Galway Blazer II. Survives a capsize in the South Atlantic before being hit and damaged by a killer whale near Western Australia. Following the roaring forties route over the Pacific and Round the Horn and the return home.

    An unusual book with reminiscences of submarine activity intermingled with the adventures of his circumnavigation.

    A special book prepared by the highly qualified Stefansson under the direction of the United Sates Army.

    Prepared to provide realistic advice on how to survive when stranded in the Arctic. The book is introduced by a historical background relating to early voyagers and the seeking of the elusive North West passage. He discusses in depth the topography of the land and the nature of the seas and ice. The climate (obviously) and the physical effects of cold. Winds, gales and special aviation problems. Wildlife, pests and parasites. Shelter and the many advantages of snow houses over tents (Voyager has memorised the methods of making good snow houses as a precaution). And survival, clothing, food, health and first aid. Hunting and fishing various methods and transportation in this difficult environment.

    Really the only Arctic Manual by Stefansson – You never know!
