500 Days – Around the World On a Twelve Foot Yacht – Serge Testa – Signed First Privately Published

A pretty rare softcover privately published by the adventurer in Aspley a suburb of Brisbane in 1988.

216 pages, illustrated from original photographs and sketches (including maps) by the author. A little turned at the corners and the very odd mark, otherwise very good condition.

Whilst some records show the smallest boat to circumnavigate was Kuczynski in May 2018 in a 21 foot vessel … we cannot understand that claim as the Serge Testa’s “Acrohc” was 40% smaller at 12 feet.

Surely cannot really be beaten – 12 foot around the World.

Blown Away [Six Years Sailing in the Pacific] – Herb Payson

A new edition softcover published by Sheridan House in 1995, 252 pages, in super condition.

Herb and Nancy Payson give up the nightclubs of Los Angeles and in a 36 foot ketch spend the next six years plus with their family in the Pacific. Adventure ensues, and not without some difficulties. They tried to settle down afterwards in Maine but not for long before they were back permanently under sail. An easy going narrative live and in the moment.

First edition softcover published by Harper in 2001. 301 pages plus list of “sources and permissions”, nicely illustrated from original photographs. A very good copy.

This is the story of the infamous Golden Globe Race when nine individuals competed to complete the fastest single handed race around the world. The outcome was not good bar for one. Some were novices or near so at the time and would go on to become masters of the craft.

The individuals were John Ridgway, Chay Blyth, Robin Knox-Johnston, Bernard Moitessier, Loick Gourgeron, Bill King, Nigel Tetley, Alex Carozzo and Donald Crowhurst. The book brilliantly takes one through the adventures, disasters and accomplishments of each.

Regarded as one of the more thorough Titanic books, with much about the before and aftermath. Written in the context of the finding of the wreck ..

Questions remain unanswered … Why was the man at the helm when she hit the iceberg packed off to South Africa? … Why did her reluctant Chief Officer still feel uneasy about a ship on which he had never sailed before … and, Why did one of her stewards “wish the bally ship at the bottom of the sea”?

A vivid and thrilling edition from Idriess on the pearling industry centred in Broome, in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Published by Angus & Robertson, Sydney. Octavo, 343 pages, 10 pages advertisements for other Idriess titles. Green cloth covered boards black titles to spine and front cover. Dust jacket designed by Edgar Alfred Holloway This is the orange variant (sometimes yellow or yellow and orange – see authority Feain and Aronry page 42). Map of northern Australia, Torres Strait and Papua New Guinea on front endpaper, rear blank. 19 pages of black and white illustrations.

Very good condition, very clean inside and a dust jacket with minor nibbles along the top and a part removed top of inside flap.

Annotated and signed boldly by Idriess on the title page … “Wishing Mrs Noah Van Cleef many happy memories on her trip to Australia. Ion L Idriess Sydney 1937” … a further note March 1, 1937 in Idriess hand bottom left of title.
