  • A Cave on Enderby Island -The Auckland Islands (Sub-Antarctic) – Louis Le Breton for Dumont d’Urville – 1840

A Cave on Enderby Island -The Auckland Islands (Sub-Antarctic) – Louis Le Breton for Dumont d’Urville – 1840

Grotte Sur L’isle Enderby – Isles Auckland.

An original lithograph from a drawing by Louis Le Breton (1818-1866) published as part of the great “Atlas Pittoresque” to accompany “Voyage au Pole Sud et dans l’Oceanie sur les corvettes l’Astrolabe et la Zelee … sous commandement de M.J. Dumont d’Urville”.

A detailed view of a cave on Enderby with indigenous birds and a small boat with figures in the foreground. Dumont d’Urville’s ships the Astrolabe and the Zelee can be seen in the background. Incidentally it was one of three scientific expeditions to visit the islands that year, the American Wilkes expedition and also that of Britain Sir James Clark Ross

Lithographed by P Blanchard. A sizeable image on sturdy paper – 35 x 21cm to the edge of the image with very wide margin. Some light marks more towards the edge of the wide margin, none on the lithograph itself as can be seen from the scan – overall in pretty good condition.

The Auckland Islands are 465 kms south of the South Island of New Zealand. Enderby is a smaller island in the group to the Northern tip of the main Auckland Island. There are no permanent inhabitants. They are a World Heritage site and classifies as sub-Antarctic. They were first discovered by Bristow in 1806 on a whaling voyage. He named them after William Eden, Baron Auckland. He also named Enderby Island the subject of this image after Samuel Enderby who sponsored his voyage.

Good early image of sub-Antarctic Enderby in the Aucklands

  • Part of Australia comprising the settled portions of New South Wales and South Australia. – William Hughes – 1844

Part of Australia comprising the settled portions of New South Wales and South Australia. – William Hughes – 1844

A fine example of Adam and Charles Black’s 1844 map which pre-dated the formation of Victoria in 1851 so here is referred to as Australia Felix. The inset map shows Norfolk Island. The coastline to the East extends past Moreton Island and to the West to Point Fowler. The interior is still sparsely understood and the extent of Lake Torrens is perhaps greatly exaggerated. Twenty Counties of New South wales are outlined in colour and a key is shown in the bottom right. Relief is shown by hachure.

Included in the National Library Collection, cited in Tooley’s dictionary of mapmakers 142. Dimensions 36.7 by 25.3 cm.

Charles and uncle Adam Black founded their publishing firm in 1807. Their publications included the Encyclopaedia Britannica and incidentally Walter Scott’s novels.

William Hughes (1818-1876) was a cartographer active in London during the middle part of the 19th century. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1838 and from 1840 taught cartography at a number of distinguished institutions and was also the map librarian at the British Museum.

  • Eastern Europe – Isakk Tirion -1733

Eastern Europe – Isakk Tirion -1733

An original copper engraved map by Dutch cartographer Isaak Tirion (1705-1765) of Eastern Europe published in Amsterdam in 1733 (dated in the plate). Very good original condition with centrefold as issued. Relief shown for all mountainous regions. Incredible detail throughout.

Tirion produced several Atlases and Dutch town plans. Some suggest that his maps were based on those of Guillaume de l’Isle although we see them as being much more detailed than de l’Isle’s standard.

  • Very Early Map of the Island of Borneo – from De Bry’s account of Van Noort’s Voyages – c1602

Very Early Map of the Island of Borneo – from De Bry’s account of Van Noort’s Voyages – c1602

An original and rare copper engraved map of the island of Borneo (Borneo Insula) and its neighbouring Islands published by Theodore De Bry. First issued circa 1602 from Olivier Van Noorts journal of his Voyages around the World.

Engraved by Benjamin Wright shows Van Noort’s ship in the bay at Brunei. The vessel is surrounded by local boats. Van Noort’s account mentions upwards of one hundred native proas clustered around him as he set anchor on 1st January 1601. His account of the area is only second to Pigafetta

Van Noort voyage was primarily to set to against the Spanish. It was a mistake as the Spanish came after him and his flagship was sunk and quite a few of his crew captured and executed. When he returned to Rotterdam he had only 48 crew out of 248 and one ship left the Mauritius. But he was the first Dutch circumnavigator and he did have this map.
