This is the hard back version of the very good compilation of key prints and their makers in the years up to 1850. Published by MacMillan, Melbourne in 1975. Landscape quarto, 139 pages heavily illustrated, obviously! Pretty good condition in a complete protected dust jacket.

And what an extraordinary record they are … where would we be with only the narrative? Every State and subject is covered selecting the very best items.

Australia has its fair share of towns no longer up to their former glory … indeed many completely gone. That is the nature of pioneering existence whether mineral or agricultural or some other purpose.

Account of a Duel between William Bland and Robert Case – George Mackaness – No 41 of 100 Limited and Signed.

George Mackaness’s limited monograph published by the author in Sydney, 1942. Signed boldly by Mackaness and numbered 41 of 100 copies only.

Mackaness referencing Bland’s own publication on the matter, the title continuing … and the circumstances that led thereto, drawn up for posterity by Dr William Bland. With a Report of the Trial, Rex v Bland, Randall and Fulton, before the Recorder of Bombay, 14th and 17th April 1813 (Extracted from the Bombay Courier) and a Memoir of Dr William Bland.

Small quarto, 40 pages with illustrations, stiff wrappers in normal Mackaness style, rubbed with some transfer on inside of covers, internally very good.

Bland one of the most interesting convict identities was sentenced to seven years transportation to Botany Bay for defending his honour and successfully killing Robert Case during a dual at Bombay. The circumstances leading up to the dual are lengthy and a most interesting account of all the carry on that ensues between gentlemen of the time to protect their honour.

In Sydney it was not long before Bland was pardoned and put his medical training to use. He rose to be an important member of the Colony … but not without a wayward period initially were his penchant for criticising the establishment saw him back in jail.

Part of Australia comprising the settled portions of New South Wales and South Australia. – William Hughes – 1844

A fine example of Adam and Charles Black’s 1844 map which pre-dated the formation of Victoria in 1851 so here is referred to as Australia Felix. The inset map shows Norfolk Island. The coastline to the East extends past Moreton Island and to the West to Point Fowler. The interior is still sparsely understood and the extent of Lake Torrens is perhaps greatly exaggerated. Twenty Counties of New South wales are outlined in colour and a key is shown in the bottom right. Relief is shown by hachure.

Included in the National Library Collection, cited in Tooley’s dictionary of mapmakers 142. Dimensions 36.7 by 25.3 cm.

Charles and uncle Adam Black founded their publishing firm in 1807. Their publications included the Encyclopaedia Britannica and incidentally Walter Scott’s novels.

William Hughes (1818-1876) was a cartographer active in London during the middle part of the 19th century. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1838 and from 1840 taught cartography at a number of distinguished institutions and was also the map librarian at the British Museum.

Original narrative by Sir Frederick Chapman. Here presented edited with an introduction, notes and commentary by noted historian George Mackaness. Published in 1962 this soft covered collectable was limited issue of only 200 copies all signed and numbered by Mackaness. This copy being number 11 nicely signed and complete as original.

Sir Frederick Chapman’s family knew Phillip in his later years – Mackaness uncovered previously unpublished material which adds to his usual well researched offering.

A Statistical, Historical and Political Description of the Colony of New South Wales, and its dependent settlements in Van Diemen’s land, with a particular enumeration of the advantages which these colonies offer for emigration ….

Book description: Limited facsimile edition of 1819 original published by Doubleday, Sydney 1978. Thick octavo, 466 pp., half leather and cloth in fine condition. This is number 33 of a special edition of only 50 copies signed by W.C Wentworth the great grandson of the author who also wrote the forward.

This was the first original work to be published by a native born Australian. Wentworth, the “Australian patriot” and chief founder of the system of colonial self-government, was born on Norfolk Island, then a penal dependency of New South Wales, where his father was the government surgeon. His enthusiastic and glowing description of the colony, which he argued was far superior to the United States as a field settlement, played a major role in attracting many new free emigrants. Also expounded are Wentworth’s on parliamentary self government, a goal which was eventually achieved in 1842.
