Published by Smith and Elder, a second edition, London 1899 in the more upmarket binding with the striking gilt whale to the front board.

Large octavo, 380 pages with 7 pages of plates and a folding map.

Bullen, a homeless waif, went so sea at twelve years old. After six years he landed at New Bedford, Massachusetts where he secured a berth on the “Cachalot” a whaler that would be his home for the next three years. A ripping yarn of fact and fiction actually based on the authors experiences on the “Splendid” of New Bedford in whaling grounds off “the Solanders, Vau Vau and the Australian Gulf”.

Admired by Rudyard Kipling as the best Whaling Narrative.

Sea of Dangers – Captain Cook and His Rivals- Geoffrey Blainey

A modern book by our choices but a special one by academic author Geoffrey Blainey.

Published by Viking, Melbourne in 2008 a first edition. Large octavo, 420 pages, nicely illustrated and in fine near new condition. A substantial book.

Blainey interestingly writes a co-mingled account of the first voyage of James Cook where he discovers the eastern coastline of Australia when at the same time Frenchman Jean de Surville was in the Pacific looking for a supposed Pacific based Jewish colony.

It is suggested that de Surville was in and around Sydney in the months before Cook arrived.

Nice work – Cook not alone the French were around!

Published by Philo Press, Amsterdam a first edition 1972.

Large octavo, 206 pages with fold-out map at rear and nautical charts, illustrated. Very good near fine condition.

A special and hard to get account of Vlamingh’s explorations of the coastline of Western Australia.

They left a pewter dish on Dirk Hartog Island and the journals and maps in the Dutch archive which form the basis of this scholarly work.

In Old Dutch and English translated with care of the then meaning.

Four excellent fold out charts assist the reader.

First published in Dutch then this version in English 1985 by the Royal Australian Historical Society. Translated by C De Heer and edited by Gunter Schilder. Fine condition. Nicely illustrated with fold out map at front.

The last voyage of exploration of the Dutch East India Company which included the West Coast of Australia. Incredible research and here published extracts from letters and journals pertinent to their discoveries.

Astounding detail and a superb reference of early Australian Coastal Exploration.

Theirs is the Glory – Great Britain II and the Round the World Race – Chay Blyth – First Edition 1974.

Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London. Octavo, 223 pages, nicely illustrated with images from photographs, charts and end paper descriptions and images of the competing vessels. Very good if not better condition.

A first edition 1974 of Chay Blyth’s brilliant book about Whitbread Round the World Race which he and his crew won convincingly in Great Brita II.

It took them only 144 days to do the 27,870 miles in four stages. Three competitors lost their lives during this race , one from Blyth’s yacht. It was tough going at times … they lost their spinnaker in the Roaring Forties and snapped the mizzen which was fixed in Sydney.

Blyth an ex paratrooper crewed the boat with his own selection of ex-paratroopers … they learned as they went and they learned well.

Chay Blyth confirmed his reputation on Great Britain II.

Published by Angus and Robertson 1977 a first edition. Octavo, 214 pages, nicely illustrated with charts and images from photographs. Very good condition.

By the tine this book had been published this formidable race had been held five times – not without the loss of life. Then regarded as the toughest of all nautical challenges and we would say this book goes “a way” to prove that claim. Superb writing and good back up images.
