Map of South Australia – John Tallis – 1851

An original John Tallis decorative map of South Australia.

Tallis maps are famous for there interesting images here of Adelaide, Natives on a Catamaran (?), Dingo or Australian Dog and the Nymphicus (Cockatiel) drawn by Warren and engraved by Rodger.

The map was engraved by John Rapkin who did all of the Australian maps in the series. This is a good original of an early Tallis map and a must for any Australian map collection.

The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society 1915 September – Exploration in the Northern Japanese Alps – Walter Weston

An exceptional mountaineering report detailing explorations in the wild and unfamiliar regions of the northern Japanese Alps, featuring the ‘Great Lotus Peak’ (O Renge), Shirouma, Shiro-Uma-Dake, Yari-Ga-Take, Akashina, Nakabusa, Yarigatake, Hodaka and the Shirasawa ravine, illustrated with photographic plates and a fold-out colour map. With interesting remarks on ancient customs practiced in remote high altitude villages.

Weston (1861-1940), is regarded as the father of mountaineering in Japan. It is largely due to him that Japanese Alpine Club was created. The map to illustrate this paper was based on the latest maps of the Topographical Survey of Japan, with alterations and additions, as existing maps needed many corrections in the mountain regions.

Weston’s post in Japan was that of a Chaplain at Yokohama, but he found leisure to go off into the interior of the country, and particularly these mountain districts, of which he knew more than any other European.

Cayenne Owl by Shaw & Nodder – c1790

A rare and striking hand coloured copper engraving of the Cayenne Owl (Cayennennsis Strix) by Shaw & Nodder published in London c1790

Described then as with a “Body streaked with reddish and transversely waved with brown the irids are yellow. It inhabits Cayenne, and is the size of the Screech Owl. The bill is horny, claws blac”

George Shaw was in charge of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. Nodder was a natural history artist and worked for Banks on his Florilegium.

Framed in gilt within cream mat board dimensions 36cms x 30cms.

An original copper engraved map published by Alexander Hogg (1778-1819) in London c1780. A Plan or Chart of Adventure Bay presented under a View of the South Side of Adventure Bay.

Enhanced with relief shown pictorially and by bathymetric soundings. Fluted Cape, Penguin Island and Grafs Point are named. Fresh water and the best place for gathering wood are clearly identified. A scale in nautical miles provides perspective

33cms x 21 cms to the map border. A good companion map to the Thomas Bowen Chart of Van Diemen’s Land. Framed inside black cored cream mat within Voyager charcoal frame.

Report on the military occupation of the German New Guinea possession – 1922 – With Very Large Coloured Map

Report (accompanied by a massive map) by the Minister of State for Defence on the military occupation of the German New Guinea possessions, published by the parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1922.

Contains a report examining the position in the Pacific at the commencement of WWI, and the dispatch of the Australian Naval and Military Expedition Force. The report examines, the movement and nature of both the German and Australian fleets around New Guinea, from the outbreak of war on 4th August, 1914. The report includes a description of the territory, the northwest Pacific Expedition, laws in force in the territory and the administration of justice, administration of native affairs, a brief examination of tropical medicine, territory revenues and tropical agriculture including currency and coinage, costs of administration and policy in regard to German nationals.

Nicely bound, by a later collector with gilt title to front spine.

The map, with dimensions of about 150x150cm (see accompanying photograph) is in colour and comprising the New Guinea mainland, New Britain and surrounding islands and the tip of Cape York. Very detailed. It represents the pre-war position and although undated likely comes from circa 1910. It is an exceptional map of the period the value of which more than underpins this item
