John Youl – the Forgotten Chaplain – Philip Blake.

Short Description

A scarce small pointed work – a biography of Rev John Youl (1773-1827) the first Chaplain in Northern Tasmania.

Octavo in size, pictorial card covers, 58 pages, super copy. No date ... circa 1990's.

Whilst the second half of this book is about John Youl’s time at port Jackson and then significantly at George Town in Northern Van Diemen’s Land it is Youl’s time in the Pacific that we find most intriguing.

Youl was part of the “missionary team” that went out on the Duff to the Pacific and in particular Tahiti in an attempt to make the Tahitians more … well less amorous. At one stage Youl was captured and seemingly destined for the pot. Because he owned a cut-throat razor he was given a task to secure his freedom – which was to shave thirty head clean – he did so and survived.

John Youl and adventurous chaplain and a handy man with a cut-throat.
