Cape River Gold Field – Report of William Rands – 1891

William Rands was Assistant Geologist to Robert Logan Jack. This is his report to the Queensland Parliament on the Cape River Gold Field.

18 foolscap pages of the usual intense observation and detail exhibited by the Queensland geological team of the period. Covers Union Reef, General Grant Reef, Hayward Reef, The Big reef, The Just-In-Time Reef, Hughes Leader, The Mystery Reef (no Mystery!), Springs reef, Mount Remarkable, Morning Star, Martin’s, Bell-Gay, Victoria, and Governor Blackall Reefs and many many more. Crushing reports with yield from Ellen Boss, Treasure and Albion as complied by Commissioner Gill.
An appendix provides a short geological description of rocks and thin section slides of 43 samples taken in the area. The thin section slides being prepared by Clarke of Charters Towers.

The report contain a folding coloured page showing 8 geological sections the first across Mr Davenport and the cape River. And a very nice coloured Geological Sketch Map of part of the Kennedy District by William Rands (50cms by 25 cms) … note our image on the Voyager website is partly truncated because of the limitations of our scanner.

Map of South Australia – John Tallis – 1851

An original John Tallis decorative map of South Australia.

Tallis maps are famous for there interesting images here of Adelaide, Natives on a Catamaran (?), Dingo or Australian Dog and the Nymphicus (Cockatiel) drawn by Warren and engraved by Rodger.

The map was engraved by John Rapkin who did all of the Australian maps in the series. This is a good original of an early Tallis map and a must for any Australian map collection.

A very good copy of The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, July 1913, containing “The British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913″ by Cmdr. E. R. G. R. Evans.

Over seventeen pages, Cmdr. Evans explores the fateful expedition that saw the death of Capt. Scott, but explores the subject from a narrative and scientific perspective, commemorating Scott, not through an examination of the man himself (Evans notes this perspective has already been well covered), but through the excellence of Scott’s preparation and vision, aided by fine charts and maps. Also very importantly narrated is the reception of Capt. Scott’s comrades at the Albert Hall in London

Also in this edition; an examination, by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, with a large colour map, of the Canadian Arctic Expedition; and, an exploration, with large map and plates, of the Monte Bello Islands with companion large map of Barrow Island and the area west of the Dampier Peninsua, prepared by P. D. Montague.
