    Collectable Marine Microscope Slides – From the 1860’s – Prepared by Edmund Wheeler – From a 19th Century Australian Collectionn

    Edmund Wheeler was a leading mid Victorian microscope slide preparer now highly collectable – one of this group is dated 1866 and the others of identical preparation must be from around that time. Ernest Wheeler sold his business to Watson & Sons in 1884 and died the following year. So all EW slides must be over 130 years old

    This group of five slides are in good condition and carry Wheeler’s distinctive yellow paper covering with burgundy and gold paper front cover with his “EW” monogram. Their condition is near perfect. They are from the collection of John Owen Evans a serious microscopist who lived in Port Fairy, Victoria and prepared slides of local subjects as well as purchasing top class London prepared slides through T Gaunt, Optician, who operated out of the Royal Arcade Melbourne.

    The samples comprise:

    Shells etc. from Chalk, Strood Hill Kent.
    North Atlantic Soundings from 2 Miles deep 1866
    Foramenifera from the Adriatic Sea
    Foramenifera from the River Suir (Ireland)
    Group of Heliopelta for Binocular

    All annotated in Wheelers tidy cursive hand and carry the circular Wheeler address label – 48 Tollington Road, Holloway, London

    A superb volume with intense detail … Life and its interpretation; hallucination and the physical phenomena of spiritualism; the problems of telepathy; Psychic experiences … Spirits or teleological automatisms, spontaneous physical phenomena, a modern poltergeist. Also witchcraft and scientific truths in fairy stories.

    Very good condition except for pages 196/7 which have suffered from having something inserted which when removed has left remnant and worn pages … all text readable … and a hard to find relevant book. Priced accordingly.

    Henry Seybert was an enthusiastic believer in Modern Spiritualism. On his death he left money to the cause and one consequence was the appointment of a Commission to investigate and report on certain elements.

    The results were published in the 1880’s and again here in this edition of 1920 which includes the introduction of Furness. The report contains full detail (transcriptions) of many live tests they observed and a review of Spiritual Photography; Mediumistic Development; Sealed Letters; Materialization etc. We are particularly intrigued by the experiments on “Slate Writing”.

    A first edition published Cassell, London 1918. Original cloth binding 270 pages … pretty good copy of a rare book … superb content.

    Conan Doyle’s introduction is very pointed. Hill, an authority sets out his history beginning (as you would) with the Antecedents – the Moral Revolt against Hell etc.; Swedenborg (born 1688) .. a Prophet? And his confluence with Mesmerism in America; cases such as the Fox family of Hydesville (the knockings); William Moses; the Society for Psychical Research; Ghosts; India and a comprehensive view of the Religious Aspect and Criticisms. A useful glossary.

In other words, the investigator seems to be driven to the conclusion that thought transference must now be included among scientifically proved facts”

    Dick Smith’s Journal the “Australian Geographic” was something special in the early editions. Here in Vol 1 No 3 of 1986 we have one of the great sources of Thylacine information in an special 18 page segment written by Andy Park and illustrated (so well) by Rod Scott.

    Great images of “Benjamin” the last tiger in captivity, sad images of early reward posters, turn of the century “Tiger Hunters” and an assessment of the Nullarbor mummy ( surely mis-dated). The then “Tiger Searchers” including Dr Eric Guiler and of course Peter Wright with his expedition headquarters near Lake Adelaide. And the sightings, and not just in Tassie. A nice chronology ends the piece to bring historical perspective to the article. Dr Bob Brown given credit for his contribution and well deserved.
