Map of Ningbo Zhejiang China – Bellin after Thornton -1746

An original copper engraved map titled “Carte de l’Isle de Che-chan ou Isle de Chusan de la Province de Che-kiang avec les Costes et Isles voisines”. Engraved by J van Schley for Jaques Nicolas Bellin Cartographer to the French Navy. It was published in Paris in 1746 as part of Prevost’s History of Voyages. The underlying charting ahd been completed by the Englishman Thornton.

The great city of Ningbo near Shanghai is seen just off the map at the top named them Ning-po .. with a note that it is known by Europeans as Liampo. The Che Kian Province now known as Zhejiang.

The map is 32cm by 21 cm to the border of the printed image. Folds as original. In pretty good condition with nice colouring and a nice compass rose. Now a very busy harbour its interesting to see so many depth measurements marked.

Map of The Turkish Empire – Tirion – 1730

An original copper engraved map by Dutch cartographer Isaak Tirion (1705-1765) of the Turkish Empire. Published in Amsterdam 1730. Very good original condition with centrefold as issued. Incredible detail throughout. Mountain ranges shown pictorially.

Tirion produced several Atlases and Dutch town plans. Some suggest that his maps were based on those of Guillaume de L’isle although we see them as being much more detailed than de L’ísle’s standard.

Naturally the map takes in areas not part of the broader Turkish Empire and covers from Portugal in the west to Persia in the east, the Horn of Africa in the South and beyond the Crimea in the North

Curious Map of the Eastern Hemisphere – Calmet 1728 – Early Australia Outline

An original special and unusual copper engraved map by Antoine Calmet (1672-1757) published in 1728 for his work on the Creation of the World. Below the map of the Old World is a sphere representing the creation of the Universe with the Earth at its centre. Very good condition un-coloured as it should be with a strong plate impression. 33cms by 22cms in plate impression.

Whilst the map highlights Africa, Europa and Asia the strong depiction of those parts of Australia discovered and mapped by the Dutch is charming with the Gulf of Carpentaria connected to New Guinea as was thought then.

Calmet was a French Benedictine monk and scholar born in Lorraine. He became very learned and out of humility refused honours from the Pope. The map is believed to have been engraved by Strackman (1680-1730) who worked with distinguished cartographers De Fer and De L’ilsle

Very Early Map of the Island of Borneo – from De Bry’s account of Van Noort’s Voyages – c1602

An original and rare copper engraved map of the island of Borneo (Borneo Insula) and its neighbouring Islands published by Theodore De Bry. First issued circa 1602 from Olivier Van Noorts journal of his Voyages around the World.

Engraved by Benjamin Wright shows Van Noort’s ship in the bay at Brunei. The vessel is surrounded by local boats. Van Noort’s account mentions upwards of one hundred native proas clustered around him as he set anchor on 1st January 1601. His account of the area is only second to Pigafetta

Van Noort voyage was primarily to set to against the Spanish. It was a mistake as the Spanish came after him and his flagship was sunk and quite a few of his crew captured and executed. When he returned to Rotterdam he had only 48 crew out of 248 and one ship left the Mauritius. But he was the first Dutch circumnavigator and he did have this map.

The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society 1915 September – Exploration in the Northern Japanese Alps – Walter Weston

An exceptional mountaineering report detailing explorations in the wild and unfamiliar regions of the northern Japanese Alps, featuring the ‘Great Lotus Peak’ (O Renge), Shirouma, Shiro-Uma-Dake, Yari-Ga-Take, Akashina, Nakabusa, Yarigatake, Hodaka and the Shirasawa ravine, illustrated with photographic plates and a fold-out colour map. With interesting remarks on ancient customs practiced in remote high altitude villages.

Weston (1861-1940), is regarded as the father of mountaineering in Japan. It is largely due to him that Japanese Alpine Club was created. The map to illustrate this paper was based on the latest maps of the Topographical Survey of Japan, with alterations and additions, as existing maps needed many corrections in the mountain regions.

Weston’s post in Japan was that of a Chaplain at Yokohama, but he found leisure to go off into the interior of the country, and particularly these mountain districts, of which he knew more than any other European.
