The Long Labrador Trail – Dillon Wallace – First Edition 1907

A first edition published by The Outing Publishing Company, New York in 1907.

Octavo, 308 pages plus appendix of weather information daily. Nicely illustrated with 29 photographic images, coloured frontispiece and folding map at rear. The beautiful pictorial covers complete a very book. A very good copy.

In 1903, Dillon Wallace (1863-1939) accompanied Leonidas Hubbard on an exploratory trip through Labrador planning to follow the Naskaupi River to Lake Michikamau where no previous Europeans had been. They followed the wrong river and got into so much difficulty. Hubbard fell ill and died of starvation. Wallace survived and wrote his first book The Lure of the Labrador Wild published in 1905. In that book, he blamed Hubbard for the mistakes he made leading to his own death, which infuriated Hubbard’s wife

Wallace planned a much more adventurous expedition, which would become the subject of this book. Hubbard’s wife on hearing of the expedition planned her own, along the same lines. She also wrote a book “A Woman’s Way Through Unknown Labrador” … neither refer to each other!

A special maritime history of Van Diemen’s Land by the knowledgeable Alan Villiers. Superbly illustrated.

Villiers himself crewed on the whale-ship Sir James Clark Ross into the Southern Ross Sea in 1923-24.

Covers Captain Kelly (see Voyager book on Kelly); The voyage of the “Woodman”; the loss of the “George III”; the adventure of the whaler “Essex” and Captain Tregurtha’s Log; Hobart Clippers and “Graveyard Island”.

The illustrations include – The “Royal William”; the “James Craig”; the “Hobart Regatta”; the “Fram” (Amundsen) in the Derwent; the “velocity” and the “Tasmanian Cape Horn Trader in Hard Weather”.

Environmental Change in the Sub-Antarctic -Proceedings of the Second International Forum on the Sub-Antarctic – Hobart April 2009

Perfect bound, softcover, 118 pages, illustrated throughout, some colour, a very good copy.

Published in the December after the conference this is the Proceeding of the Royal Society of Tasmania, representing Volume 143 Parts I and II.

Part I features … Climate trends at Macquarie Island; Exploitation of the marine ecosystem; Biological systems at Prince Edward Island; Terrestrial vegetation changes at Macquarie and Heard islands; Invasive species etc

Part II features … Orchids of Macquarie island; Freshwater diatoms; Antarctic vignettes Shackleton; Foraminifera ad paleoenvironment of Late Pleistocene sands, White Rock Point, Southeastern Tasmania; HMS Beagle in Tasmanian waters.

We particularly like the foram papers by Quilty et al … the site being round South Arm … and the tracking of the Beagle is up right up our street … or Ocean.

Voyages Toward Antarctica 1699-1839 – Below the Convergence – Alan Gurney

We have swapped the title and sub-title around as the sub makes perfect sense.

Another well researched book by Alan Gurney published by Norton, New York / London in 1997.

Octavo, 315 pages, some illustrations, great useful maps, 15 in all, at the back and the extensive bibliography. A fine copy.

This earlier Antarctic period is of special interest to Voyager. We start with Halley and the Paramore, Cook, Bellingshausen, Weddell, Biscoe, Kemp and Balleny etc. Earlier sealers made their mark without too much fuss.

Roald Amundsen’s Journey in Flight – From Pole to Pole – Garth Cameron.

Hard to find in Australia possibly because of the unusual publisher Skyhorse Publishing albeit first American 2014 having been published by the equally difficult to find Pen and Sword, England version of the previous year.

Octavo, 199 pages, illustrated throughout, maps and from original photographs. Useful although sometimes patronising glossary of terms [we do know what an aircraft is]. Very good if not fine copy.

Amundsen’s aviation involvement and it was extensive and, given the period, rather experimental. He was lost through it in the end … his list of life achievements is undoubtedly heroic – we find this side of him all that more interesting.

The writer a New Zealander with a love of flying – powered and gliding produces a well researched book – the presentation has a hint of a self-published style likely because of then Skyhorse – but we like it.

Amundsen in the air – the cold air that is – a significant story and one that was his end.

Rough Water – Stories of Survival from the Seas – Clint Willis

A worthy soft cover published by the aptly named Adrenaline Books, New York in 1999. Octavo, 356 pages, fancy wrap card covers add to sturdiness. Very good to better copy.

Interesting mix of fact and fiction from Shackleton, Knox-Johnstone, Trumbull on the raft with Patrick O’Brian and Wauk (Caine Mutiny – let’s not forget Bogie!) then on to cold water and David Lewis etc. Glossary and bibliography at the end all help those new to the water.
