Special Ephemeral item – The Wattle Grove Press – Newnham Tasmania – Promotional Item – 1960’s

The Wattle Grove Press at 69 George Town, Newnham, Tasmania published the books of Albin Eiger is limited edition.

Albin Eiger was the pen name of Professor Rolf Hennequel (1895-1971) who travelled the world before settling in Tasmania in 1951. The press commenced in the early 1960’s before illness forced its closure in 1969.

The works were so beautiful printed on rich hand-made paper with bold typescript, limitations varied but were extremely tight, sometimes a maximum of fifty.

This document is printed on the thickest of hand-made paper – has a vellum like feel. Large format 34 cm by 22 cm, printed only three pages printed one side only, folded.

It ends with and interesting note … “All books from our Press are printed, illustrated and bound by hand, and exhibit the advantages and, also disadvantages – which work of this kind is thought to possess in the machine age”.

And then references the Library National of France who have clearly taken a liking “the books of the W.G.P. are unique pieces of literature, and unique attempts at printing”

Van Diemens Land [Blackman’s Bay] and Ontong Java – Schley at the Hague in 1758

This unusual image was published by De Hondt, the Hague in 1758 for Provost’s History of Voyages. The image engraved by Jakob van der Schley was originally conceived by Francois Valentijn in 1726 relating to the voyage of Abel Tasman – that is that is what these images represent.

To focus on the lower image titled “Pays de Van Diemen // Diemens Land’ the image is actually of Blackman’s Bay the first place of landing of Abel Tasman.

The top image is of Ontong Java also know as Lord Howes Atoll but not to be confused with Lord Howe Island. Ontong Java is part of the Solomons Group – a small “boot shaped” island to the far north.

Sheet size 25 cm by 19 cm – image, with a strong impression and colouring 18 cm by 14 cm. A copper plate etching on hand made verge paper – a little creasing, generally a very good authentic example.

Mining Smelting Railways of the Rosebery region [Western Tasmania] – Ian Stewart – 1984

We really admire the likes of Ian Stewart who put the effort in to gather, digest and present histories of the likes of Rosebery and its surrounding region at the very heart of geology and mining in Tasmania – so much potentially to be forgotten history.

Published in 194 as a second edition – we cannot find a first and only one other second for sale. Would have been produced in small numbers.

Sponsored by the EZ Mining Company. Larger format card covers, deign to front, staple bound, 70 pages. Acknowledgements inside back cover, map of the region including the railways and tram lines, many images from period photographs, very grainy images but forgive them for their relevance and rarity.

Whilst focused around Rosebery [our favourite continuing Tasmanian mine] we have good content on Dundas, Mt Williamsford and Zeehan and its before time smelter capacity [Originally German owned and taken at the outset of WWI]. The rapid development and demise of Dundas – the two foot rail gauge and the politics around the Emu Bay destination all add interest.

A quality production, Number 3 in the Australian Maritime Series published by Hordern House, Sydney.

A Limited edition of 950 copies hand bound in midnight blue Scottish calf with marbled papered boards. Designed by Margo Snape.

Octavo, 103 pages plus portrait frontispiece, six folding plates and folding map at rear. All in very good condition.

First published in 1767 one of the rarest accounts. First time reissued faithfully reproduced.

The original account used as a reference on the Endeavour and mentioned by Banks and Cook.

The Lighthouse Cookbook – Shirley Baker

We love – not only the concept of a lighthouse conceived cookbook but the fact it was put together by Shirly BAKER.

Published by Forty Degrees south, Hobart in 2009 for the Friends of Deal Island and Tasman Island – lighthouse devotees.

Spiral bound cookbook style, 163 pages, with the odd lighthouse image and relevant foodie sketches. Interesting “lighthousey” narrative to start.

Our favourites must be mentioned – sweetcorn and crab soup; Bass Strait spinach and feta pie; Konigsberger klopse[look it up] and Melaleuca chicken casserole – oh and Barn Hill baked rabbit etc etc and some nice sweet things.

You don’t need to be in a lighthouse to have a lighthouse dinner party … go for the klopse.
