A bit of age to the jacket, see image, and a previous owner has kindly spot pasted an article about the Shakespeare an Co bookshop in Paris which features in AMF being a favourite Hemingway haunt – as well as Joyce, Pound etc. otherwise very clean, top edge stained red as required. Still a very good example.

Our favourite edition Published by Jonathan Cape, London this issue 1975. Presented in that classic wrap around cover. Scarce and sought after in this Cape form. All about the bullfight in Hemingway.

The dust jacket designed by Hans Tindall. Octavo, 286 pages, a pretty good copy. The strong bull image on the dust jacket is repeated boldly on the front board. Stunning.

Hemingway – High on the Wild – Lloyd Arnold

A 1977 edition of this table book relating to Hemingway’s time and family in the mountains of his beloved Idaho. Hemingway as we all know had a penchant for Cuba, Spain, Paris, Africa [the hunt] but it was the snowy winters of Idaho that he kept going back to.

Lloyd Arnold as a friend and this book was sponsored by Hemingway’s son … it contains many images of the great man with friends and family and the odd partridge. They all look very happy and rustic – even those with Cary Grant. It makes us feel better about what would become a troubled life.

Published by Grosset & Dunlap, quarto, 163 pages, heavily illustrated from original photographs. A little fixed to page edges otherwise a good copy.

Fitzgerald and Hemingway – a Dangerous Friendship – Matthew Bruccoli

A seriously interesting and entertaining account of the “dangerous” friendship between these two literary greats. The author Bruccoli, Professor of English at the South Carolina University and the man who penned numerous works relating to the subject pair and the definitive bibliography of Fitzgerald.

This the first UK edition published by Andre Deutsch in 1995, Octavo, 236 pages, illustrated from appropriate photographs, book cover etc.

It is the previously unpublished letters that make it for Voyager. The intellectual battle for humour, the banter the ribbing, the intensity, and the soul bared is special. Hemingway holds nothing back reading stream of consciousness [he did not like it] so Joyce et al get a quiet pasting. Zelda arises in the background Hemingway’s view strongly that she held back the great SFG and man who could have been America’s greatest writer.

A Farewell to Arms – Original Soundtrack -1957

The original soundtrack to the movie base on the Ernest Hemingway classic “A Farewell to Arms”. Long playing record, 33 RPM, from Capitol Records, super condition.

Released the same year as the famous movie starring Rock Hudson, Jennifer Jones and Vittorio de Sica, directed by Charles Condor. The semi-autobiographical story had been mad into a stage play shortly after the books release in 1929. An earlier film starred Gary Cooper.

Music composed by the legendary Mario Mascimbene … conducted by Franco Ferrara and recorded in Rome. Opening with a cannonade of percussion portraying the war theme. The introduction of harmonica and guitar expressing the lighthearted camaraderie between the three soldiers. Introduction of horns and strings depicting the Alpine setting. the beautiful “love theme” with strings and harp … up to the symbolic sound of raindrops as Henry waits helplessly for Catherine …
