The Voyage of Jacob Le Maire and William Schouten 1615-1616: Mirror of Australian Navigation. Originally translated by Alexander Dalrymple – A Beautiful Book

A special production published by Hordern House, Sydney 1999. Folio (30.5 x 20.2cm), quarter bound in quarter alum-tawed goat skin and quality marbled paper. Printed on Raleigh Oxford cream paper .. a fine copy as if new.

One of 950 copies thus, 96 page facsimile of the original Dutch printing followed by 65 page facsimile of the original Dalrymple translation. Illustrated with 5 black and white and 7 colour illustrations and 3 colour maps on double pages. Frontispiece double hemisphere world map as published in Amsterdam in 1618..

The objective of the voyage was further the lucrative trade in nutmeg and pepper by forging a new route to the East Indies via South America and the Pacific, influenced by the account of the voyage of de Quiros, the Portuguese navigator. In doing so it was hoped that the Great South Land would be encountered.

Abel Tasman Medal – 350th Anniversary of the Discovering of the West Coast of Tasmania 1642-1992 [Large Version]

An interesting medallion for historians and the cartographically inspired. Produced for the Trust Bank of Tasmania.

48 mm diameter, 42 gm, intricately engraved on one side with gum leaf design on reverse.

The intricate design has a map of the central west coast of Tasmania noting Zeehan, Queenstown and Strahan; a nice image of Tasman’s vessel and a compass rose. Narrative details of the sighting 24th November 1642 and the landing at Tasman Bay on the East side on the 3rd of December 1642.

Large Scale Copper Engraving of the Façade of Amsterdam Town Hall – Jacob van Campden – 1661

Original large folio copper engraving of the Amsterdam Town Hall. The western façade showing ground floor entrance and first, second and third floor windows divided into upper and lower sections. A fronton with a statue either end and in the middle Atlas carrying the world globe. The actual length of the building is 79 metres.

Central fold – paper xxcm by xxcm. Apologies that it is too big to get a full image on our large scanner .. but almost. Sowing some age as you would expect but still a very worthy example and would make a superb architectural framed item .. if you are Dutch even better.

Cartography -The Cape of Good Hope 1782-1842 – from De la Rochette to Arrowsmith

The Map Collectors’ Circle publication published in 1965, No 17 by D Schire. Very good condition.

Usual original flesh coloured card covers, design to front. 16 pages of detailed narrative and catalogue plus 15 plates of maps. Very good condition .. the covers look a little blemished but its our scanner – they are perfect.

Whilst the 1782 date refers to the maps by de la Rochette published between 1782 and 1795, we also have the Faden Plan of the Town of Cape of Good Hope which whilst published in 1795 is as a result of work completed and noted within the map in 1770.

After a very good introductory narrative, we have a single page of selected dates commencing with the District of Swellendham being proclaimed in 1743.

Sent Forth a Dove [Discovery of the Duyfken] – James Henderson

In 1606 the Dutch India Company ship the Duyfken came upon the Cape York Peninsula. The author reconstructs the fascinating adventure of this little ship and tells of the building of the replica.

The Duyfken appeared at the Hobart Wooden Boat Festival in 2023.We hope it returns in 2025. Voyager photograph of the vessel in the River Derwent shown here.

A softcover, large octavo, 218 pages, heavily and nicely illustrated. Published by the University of Western Australia in 1999. A super copy.

A Record of Tasmanian Nomenclature with Dates and Origins – J Moore-Robinson

Extremely scarce item> we have not seen any original copies available .. and this one in fine condition.

A pretty early place-name book … that is mainly European place-names. At a time when the consideration of original aboriginal names for places is foremost in mind this is a worthwhile counterpoint. We are not sure which work has most places covered … a confluence of both would be worthwhile … we don’t mean reading the obvious .. more the less obvious.
