Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania – 1889 [Important Papers by James Backhouse Walker and others]

Printed at the “Mercury” in 1890 a first published. An important journal containing some special papers particularly by James Backhouse Walker – this is the first appearance of his work on “the English of the Derwent and the Risdon Cove Settlement; the Expedition under Lieut-Governor Collins in 1803-2 and The Founding of Hobart by Lieut.-Governor Collins – this later paper including a fine reproduction of an early plan of Hobart.

Other papers of considerable interest include – ‘notes on Charts of the coast of Tasmania, obtained from the Hydrographical Department Paris and copied by permission of the French Government – A Mault – with four super folding facsimile maps. Mault also produces a paper on the detention of Matthew Flinders at Mauritius.

Other papers include notes on the last living Aboriginal, Fanny Cochrane Smith – with some contention still as to whether she was full blood – sorry it’s a suspect term. Also, papers of astronomical, geological, palaeontological etc interest.

Original soft wrappers, xxxvii pages followed by 263 pages including a good index. A very solid edition with much more content than usual.

Francois Peron’s Natural History of Maria Island Tasmania. – Brian Plomley and Others

Another Plomley rarity we don’t expect to see again for a long time.

Published as part of the Records of the Queen Victoria Museum in 1990.

Soft cover, 50 pages, with charts etc all in fine condition.

Baudin spent three days circumnavigation Maria Island in February 1802. Francois Peron was zoologist but also made meteorological, geomorphic, botanical observation – a multi faceted scientist was Peron.

Peron knew his stuff when it came to Maria.

A special maritime history of Van Diemen’s Land by the knowledgeable Alan Villiers. Superbly illustrated.

Villiers himself crewed on the whale-ship Sir James Clark Ross into the Southern Ross Sea in 1923-24.

Covers Captain Kelly (see Voyager book on Kelly); The voyage of the “Woodman”; the loss of the “George III”; the adventure of the whaler “Essex” and Captain Tregurtha’s Log; Hobart Clippers and “Graveyard Island”.

The illustrations include – The “Royal William”; the “James Craig”; the “Hobart Regatta”; the “Fram” (Amundsen) in the Derwent; the “velocity” and the “Tasmanian Cape Horn Trader in Hard Weather”.

Thick octavo, 398 pages including extensive bibliography. A very good. Illustrated with maps and charts.

The Dutch East India vessel Batavia struck an uncharted reef off the West Coast of Australia on her maiden voyage in 1629. A total of 332 men, women and children were on board. A few headed off in a life boat to seek help. The remainder ended up on a small coral island less than a kilometre long. A band of mutineers began a cold – blooded killing spree … only eight remained alive when help arrived three months later. The ringleader Jeronimus Cornelisz a failed apothecary and heretic.

Gruesome true story of the strangest atrocities following a shipwreck off Australia in 1629.
