This tour guide is not dated and what would you expect from the three rogues Tatlow, Wooley and Mercer.

Self published in 2008. Softcover, 232 pages, extensively illustrated. Ownership signature at front, otherwise a very good copy.

The three claim the book to be “Your official guide and ripper true tales of the past” … Overseas buyers to translate “ripper” to can’t be beaten etc.

We have a map near the front that plots the referenced route – all tow thousand plus kilometres of it – often to out of the way off the beaten track places.

Really a special guide all the more readable because of the muted eccentricity of the writers – true Tasmanian boys.

Original Joseph Lycett – Mount Wellington – near Hobart Town – Van Diemens Land -1826

An original hand coloured aquatint from the scarce “Views in Australia, or New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land”

By Joseph Lycett published in London in 1826 by J Souter of 73 St Pauls Church Yard.

Lycett was a convict artist of great distinction – he had been sent out for forgery. He was pardoned and later returned to England where he again went about his forger’s ways – he took his own life in prison. His artistry is unique and charming and he produced 50 images of New South Wales mainly in and around Sydney and a number of beautiful views in Tasmania.

The Story of Battery Point – Street by Street – Donald Howatson

Produced by the author in 2012. A must have for anyone interested in the history of delightful upmarket and historic Battery Point, Hobart. Not rare and quite often reproduced.

Comb bound, 62 pages, nicely illustrated and a first “printing” for sure … some we see the images (which are many and important) deteriorate as further copies are made by the xerox method.

Blue protected covers with various ornament front and back. Our favourite is the shipyards with the pubs a close second … many have closed – such a pity.

Battery Point more to the point.

The Story of Central Hobart – Street by Street – Donald Howatson

Produced by the author in 2015. A must have for anyone interested in the history of the City area of Hobart. Perhaps the most interesting of a series of booklets published over time by Howatson. Not rare and quite often reprinted or copied may be the correct expression.

The Printed Maps of Tasmania 1642-1900 – R.V. Tooley – Limited to 370 Copies

Published by Francis Edwards, Marylebone High Street, London in 1975.

Large octavo, original blue cloth, 88 pages of narrative followed by 49 plates of example maps referenced in the narrative. A very good copy.

The definitive book and a limited edition of only 370 copies making it pretty scarce when you think about how many map collectors there are out there.

Divided into … the Dutch Period; the French Influence; Printed maps of Tasmania and its Parts; Inset maps of Tasmania …in total 530 defined items.

Skinner Prout in Australia 1840-48

If you want to collect Skinner Prout you may be too late his works are fetching big prices.

This is the best “get to know him” book put together by Tony Brown and Hendrik Kolenberg to accompany a tour of Prout’s work held in 1987.

Squarish format, perfect bound, 80 pages, with many illustrations of the works … super biographical outline of the master. Very good if not better condition.

Sought after reference to Skinner Prout.
