Massive Ducretet Gas Discharge Tube – Paris c1890

This massive discharge tube was made by Eugene Ducretet (1844-1915) a leading French scientific instrument maker who opened his first shop retailing unusual scientific instruments in Paris in 1864. This instrument is engraved with his name E Ducretet A Paris to the top tap.

It is one of the largest, heaviest and most unconventional discharge tubes we have seen. Standing 60 cms high an in pretty good condition for its age – we have left the brass work as we found it – the threads to the vacuum inlet work albeit stiff and the thread to the to mount are in very good condition. The extremely thick glass tube is at a slight angle but the seals appear intact. A very rare scientific collectable from the early days of gas discharge experiments.

Least Horned Owl – Shaw & Nodder – 1790

Copper engraved and hand coloured this engraving of the mysterious Least Horned Owl was published in 1790 by Shaw & Nodder.

George Shaw was in charge of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. Nodder was a natural history artist and worked for Banks on his Florilegium.

Framed in gilt dimensions 36cms x 30cms.

The Journal of The Royal Geographical Society 1931 October – Baluchistan – C.P. Skrine

A near mint copy of the October edition 1931 of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society London. The primary report is by Skrine on his travels and observations in Baluchistan mainly in the Highlands or Persian Baluchistan. Well illustrated with18 black and white photographs taken on the travels – some rather spectacular such as the “Earth Pillar” above Tamindan and the view of Kuh-i-Taftan from the cliffs of Lejwar. The report supported by a map of the Highlands region prepared by Skrine with an inset map of the broader Baluchistan.

This edition also includes one of the reports of Michael Terry relating to his travels in West Australia (Horseshoe Bend to Oodnadatta) also nicely illustrated with maps and photographs. As well as details of a 16th century manuscript navigating manual in the Society’s Library.

Thietmarsia (Dithmarshen) Germany – Bertius -1599

An early miniature published at the very end of the 16th century. From the great geographer Petrus Bertius published by Cornelis Claesz as part of the “Caert-thresoor” in Amsterdam in 1599.

Historically famous and geographically interesting district of Thietmarsia (now Dithmarschen) Germany. North to the left bordered by the rivers Eyder (Eider) to the North and the Albis (Elbe) to the South and the German Ocean (North Sea. Most of the land here below natural sea level and much new land has been reclaimed since this map was produced making it all that more interesting.
