  • The Thames Miner’s Guide (NZ Gold Fields) – 1868

The Thames Miner’s Guide (NZ Gold Fields) – 1868

Scarce as hen’s teeth – only facsimiles available elsewhere. Published in Auckland by Edward Wyte in 1868. Originally published with two maps – this copy only with a fixed folding map at the front of the Thames Gold Field lithographed by Hutchinson of Auckland. Bound in original green cloth boards with title in gilt to front, 98 pages plus two page diagram of gold extraction process 24 pages of period advertisements of some interest in that they include stockbroker, dealers as well as service providers to the mining community.

The majority of the book covers gold mining in a more general manner – occurrence and chemistry, geology of Cormandel, Seymour Hughes Machine, the Stelefeldt Furnace, Port Philip Company Systems. Attwood System, California before in the second half focusing on the Thames Field. A description of Companies working the claim is given in detail with a description of the claims and the machinery then in use. The spine is chipped to the top and bottom and there is a repaired split to the frontispiece map and the vague hint of an old water stain to the top third of the text. Nevertheless, the condition would be considered rather good for what is very scarce gold mining publication

NZ Gold Mining Rarity from 1868
