Original copperplate engraving by distinguished cartographer Robert Benard recording Cook’s navigational records, published in Paris circa 1774. Large format 77cm by 36cm, original folds, coloured in outline.

On his first of three voyages James Cook discovered and charted the East Coast of Australia for the first time and this chart resulted from that work. There are many interesting features including Mt Warning, the Glass House Mountains (named as such because they reminded Cook of the view of the coastal Glass Kilns as seen from the water in the South West of England) and the record of the grounding on the reef of Cape Tribulation before recovering the vessel in the Endeavour River in the Far North.

Self published by the principal author in 1992. The work follows a further four years research by Anne Needham after she first published on the subject.

Perfect bound large format, card cover, 187 pages illustrated nicely throughout. Scarce and sought after – a very good copy

The seventy-six convict woman are listed on the front cover and the list of free female passengers are listed on the title.

The convict women came from all parts of England. At the end of a good Introduction we see a map with the locations and names. The extraordinary history behind many, if not all, is set out incredibly well in the first 120 pages. Then the voyage out then the goings on at Norfolk Island and New South Wales.

A first edition published by Harper Collins, London in the year 2000. A substantial book that will require an Overseas postage supplement.

Largeish quarto, 240 pages, heavily illustrated throughout. A very good copy. Marine collector Naughton’s bookplate on front paste down. The writer and the illustrator both veterans of “naval publication” including elements of Jane’s.

The period 1756 – 1815 was one of heightened naval conflict like no other time. George III was the British Monarch through this entire period … the Seven Years’ War; The American War of Independence; The Revolutionary War; Napoleon and the War of 1812. It must have seemed strange when it was all over?

All the wars and most of the ships.

A first printing of this full history of Port Dalrymple and by Oxford educated Bethell.

Published by the University in 1957. Pink card cover, 193 pages, illustrated plus voluminous index at rear. Slight chip to top left otherwise very good, very clean internally.

A well received history at the time and still the “go to” reference. Worthy, relevant illustrations help with the comprehensive text.

Relic from the Otago – Skuttled in the Derwent, Tasmania – Past Captain being the Distinguished Author Joseph Conrad.

A solid piece of wood with some remnant attached claimed to be from the vessel “Otago” which was sunk in the Derwent before bits were reclaimed – in particular scrap metal which went to Japan much to the chagrin of the locals.

18cm by 13cm by 3cm.

The inscription reads “Otago 367 ton Barque – 1869 Built Glasgow – 1900 Used as a coal hulk, Hobart – 1931 Stranded, Otago Bay Derwent River, Tasmania. – She was the only command of the Author Joseph Conrad”.
