A second printing of Rae’s sought after book on the Tasmanian West Coast railways. These railways stimulated at the end of the 19thC and beginning of the 20thC by the huge development of mining activity in the region.

So, this is more than a book about trains as the railways were a fundamental requirement of the success of the region. And, the timing of it brought some of the most interesting steam engines ever constructed … the authors adoration of the Beyer Garratts is justified.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel [The Great 19thC Engineer] – L.T.C. Rolt

A first edition published by Longmans, London in 1958.

Probably the best book about IKB surely the greatest engineer of the 19th Century and keeping all things relative perhaps the greatest ever.

Large octavo, 345, illustrated throughout. A little age an a hint of “parfum de library” … otherwise a nice copy.

A weighty biography which deals with every aspect of his engineering prowess … his bridges, tunnels, Great Western Railways and the monstrous stem ships that broke the mould in design and scale …

This book has obviously been owned by an admirer of the great man. An image of IKB has been carefully manicured and pasted opposite the preface and many ephemeral items have been placed in strategic spots throughout. We have left them there as it give the book a unique character which we do not wish to spoil.

Brunel – Engineering Design came naturally to him.

A History of Trains and Trams in Tasmania – Thomas Cooley.

Thomas Cooley previously published “Railroading in Tasmania” and had completed this work concerning his lifetime interest just before he died.

Published posthumously by the Tasmanian Government Printer, Caudell in 1987. Octavo, 184 pages, illustrated from some super period photographs, maps of lines etc.

A quite special book and naturally the train systems being connected so much to the broader history of Tasmania … the development of mining in the West and North East for example. We particularly like the references to and images of early operating traction engines which couldn’t make there way into the unambiguous title.

A Pictorial History of The railway & Tramways of Western Australia – Ronald Aubrey.

Effectively self published at the OBM Bookshop, Hobart in 1975. The author a resident of Zeehan in Western Tasmania, in the very heart of this historic account.

Soft cover, large format, 52 pages, back covers a little edge nibbled, otherwise a very good copy. Ninety seven images from period photographs of the trains and trams make this a special record.

Through the early mining development of this remote region a number of lines were built and the book covers them all .. Emu Bay to Mt Bischoff; the Waratah Tramway; the Magnet Tramway; Tullah Tramway; My Lyell and Zeeham Railways etc etc

Self published by the author in 1993. Scarce and worthy history of the Hobart tramways .. we wish they were still here.

Perfect bond small folio, 64 pages, magnificently illustrated from original photographs, mots not found anywhere else. End paper maps of the tram networks.

The Hobart tram system was the first successful electric tram system in the Southern Hemisphere commencing in 1893.

With systems out to Glenorchy through Springfield; the Lenah Valley; Proctors Road; Sandy Bay; West Hobart and a beauty out to the Cascades and the Brewery. Those that know Hobart will understand the extensiveness and the amenity that the tramways must provided.

The author a transport buff who made it his career spent many years in Hobart even though this publication was completed after he had returned to the other island.

The Horse Tramways of Adelaide 1875-1907 – L.S. Kingsborough

Now this is a local history of special interest. The intensity and variety of horse drawn trams in the city of Adelaide and its suburbs was special by any standards.

A card covered perfect bound publication of the Adelaide Libraries Board so done to a good standard with photographic images, diagrams etc that really enhance the understanding.

Squarish octavo, 86 pages plus a5 pages of appendices. Published in 1965 a rare and very good condition copy.
