The author Dimsdale Stocker refers to Bennett of the Society for Psychical Research “The conclusion seems to be irresistible, that the five senses do not exhaust the means by which knowledge may enter the mind. In other words, the investigator seems to be driven to the conclusion that thought transference must now be included among scientifically proved facts”

Tasmanian Tiger – Extinct or Merely Elusive – Andy Park – Australian Geographic 1986

Dick Smith’s Journal the “Australian Geographic” was something special in the early editions. Here in Vol 1 No 3 of 1986 we have one of the great sources of Thylacine information in an special 18 page segment written by Andy Park and illustrated (so well) by Rod Scott.

Great images of “Benjamin” the last tiger in captivity, sad images of early reward posters, turn of the century “Tiger Hunters” and an assessment of the Nullarbor mummy ( surely mis-dated). The then “Tiger Searchers” including Dr Eric Guiler and of course Peter Wright with his expedition headquarters near Lake Adelaide. And the sightings, and not just in Tassie. A nice chronology ends the piece to bring historical perspective to the article. Dr Bob Brown given credit for his contribution and well deserved.

Sebastian “Pfarrer” Kneipp – “My Water-Cure” – 1890

Sebastian Kneipp, born 1821, a Bavarian priest and one of the key founders of the naturopathic movement in medicine here outlines his “Kneipp cure”, first published in 1886 which cited healing and therapeutic effects from application of hydrotherapy, with differing temperatures and pressures of water.

Kneipp himself believed that hydrotherapy gleaned from a book he found was the catalyst for his recovery from a bout of tuberculosis earlier in his life.

Massive Ducretet Gas Discharge Tube – Paris c1890

This massive discharge tube was made by Eugene Ducretet (1844-1915) a leading French scientific instrument maker who opened his first shop retailing unusual scientific instruments in Paris in 1864. This instrument is engraved with his name E Ducretet A Paris to the top tap.

It is one of the largest, heaviest and most unconventional discharge tubes we have seen. Standing 60 cms high an in pretty good condition for its age – we have left the brass work as we found it – the threads to the vacuum inlet work albeit stiff and the thread to the to mount are in very good condition. The extremely thick glass tube is at a slight angle but the seals appear intact. A very rare scientific collectable from the early days of gas discharge experiments.
