Rare Historical Microscope Slide HMS Dart Survey – Australian Waters 1897

HMS Dart was actively involved in Hydrographic and Scientific Surveys in the Australian waters in the later stages of the 19th century. This unique slide of Foraminifera collected at 38 degrees South 149 degrees East (South of Tamboon) in Eastern Victoria to the East end of the Bass Strait. Comprising a numbered grid of 24 positions with forams glued down (some have come loose over the years).

Quality Scientific Model of a Hydra

A very good example of a hand painted biological model from the 1960’s. Now collectable and 1906 “scientifically decorative”.

The Hydra is a small fresh water animal with remarkable properties. These predatory little creatures possess radial symmetry and can be found in many un-polluted fresh water ponds. Multi-cellular and only a few millimetres long they lend themselves to microscopic study. They have an incredible regenerative capacity which makes them extremely interesting … they do not appear to age or die of old age.

The tubular body is secured by a sticky foot called the basal disc. At the other end a mouth opening is surrounded by a number of tentacles each of which is clothed in stinging cells (oouch!). The nasty bits explosively discharge a dart of neurotoxins into the prey sometimes in their hundreds (double ooouch!). They reproduce by growing “buds” on the body wall which become miniature Hydra that break away (convenient). They also have another more complex manner of reproduction when times get tough for food. All of this and more makes the Hydra a very interesting little beauty to study.

Early Scientific Engraving – A System of Chemistry – Rennolds -1788

A fine hand coloured engraving of various items of chemical apparatus some in fiery use. Engraved by Rennolds and published by Alexander Hogg at the Kings Arms No 16 Paternoster Row, London in 1788. This was the same period in which Hogg was publishing Cook’s Voyages.

Included in the Royal Cyclopaedia and is one of the best early engravings depicting scientific apparatus. 35cm by 20 cm to the border of the engraved area with wide margins.

William Bragg – Nobel Laureate – Transactions and Proceedings Royal Society of South Australia Vol XXX – 1906

A good copy in original card cover 373 pages after preliminaries 12 interesting plates with 12 figures in the etc.

Another historically important edition with three papers by William Bragg. First, on the ionisation of various gases by the alpha particles of radium. Secondly, the alpha particles of Uranium and Thorium. And the third, an extension of the work carried out in the first with a plate showing the construction of the ionisation chamber. Bragg also gets involved in reporting the discovery of radium at Moonta Mines.

Also of special interest are two paper by Mawson. Mineralogical notes – fetid feldspar and quartz from Umberatana and atacamite from Bimbowrie. On certain new mineral species associated with carnotite in the radio-active ore body near Olary.
