Mon Voyage Aux Terres Australes – Journal Personnel du Commandant Baudin illustre par Lesueur et Petit

A special book, in the French language, published by Imprimerie Nationale, Paris in the year 2000. Large octavo, 467 pages original illustrated softcover. Very high standard of colour illustration.

Illustrations include 2 sketch plans, 2 maps, 4 charts and 10 facsimiles of original manuscripts, plus 96 colour plates with 195 illustrations – including 5 insects, 5 animals, 96 fish and marine animals, many relating to Australia. Also some views and many coastal views and 10 magnificent portraits of aboriginals. Very good near fine condition.

The journal of Baudin commences in March 1800 at Le Harve. Baudin had been given command of an expedition to map the South West and South coast of Australia. He had two ships, Geographie and Naturaliste the latter captained by Hamelin. They had a total of nine naturalists on board. By May 1801 they has reached the West Coast of New Holland. Moving east they famously met Flinders at Encounter Bay. They sailed to Sydney and down to Van Diemen’s Land and reached the d’Entrecasteaux Channel and then Maria Island by November 1801. It is claimed that more than 2,500 new species were discovered on the voyage.

Incidentally, it is now claimed that naturalist Francois Peron later wrote a report for Napoleon on ways to invade and capture the British Colony at Sydney Cove.

Even if you have limited French this book is worthwhile for the magnificence of the illustrations.

Marsden Hordern’s magnificent book about “the Work of Phillip Parker King in the Mermaid and Bathurst 1817-1822”.

A quality production by the Miegunyah Press. Published in 1998 a second limited release. Large octavo, 441 pages nicely illustrated throughout some in colour many from images drawn or painted by PPK. A heavy book. Eight folding historic maps in facsimile in pocket at rear.

Fine condition, if read very carefully cared for, no marks, dust jacket no marks whatsoever and maps pristine.

We agree with the summary of this work .. Phillip Parker King stands with Cook and Flinders in the history of exploration and charting of the Australian coastline. To a degree until this book he has not been given the credit deserved … this sumptuous book makes amends. It is the go to reference of PPK and his time in and around the Australian coastline. A must have and already highly sought after.

“This road runs to the west at Mt Lyell, 157 miles from Hobart. Highest point 2,720 feet above sea level. It is highly spectacular, with views over scores of great mountains and ranges”.

Tuckey’s Voyage (to Port Philip) – an abridgement 1805

An abridgement of the 239 pages “An account of a Voyage to establish a Colony at Port Philip, in Bass’s Strait, on the south coast of New South Wales, in his majesty’s ship Calcutta, in the years 1802-3-4, by J. H. Tuckey Esq First Lieutenant of the Calcutta” – Longman & Co, London.

20 pages in simple blue sugar paper wrappers. Refer Ferguson bibliography of Australia, 410 and copy in the National Library Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK1729.

Much of the twenty pages is taken up by the voyage out but the arrival at Port Philip and the difficulties and hostilities encountered with the local aboriginal group are written up in detail and give a good understanding as to why the site was abandoned for the Derwent.

Photographer Owen Hughes was born in St Mary’s Tasmania. This is his best work on the island. Many striking images some covering both landscape pages to dramatic effect.
