    First printing 1961 of Clifford Craig’s definitive book on the engravers of Tasmania and their art.

    Small quarto, 172 pages, published by the Tasmanian Historical Research Association. Decorative covered boards depicting life around the harbour in Hobart. Illustrated with 44 plates of examples. Limited to 1,000 copies and intended to be numbered and signed … this one was overlooked as were many.

    Covers after a good introduction … the James Ross and Henry Melville Presses; Charles Atkinson; Benjamin Duterrau; John Skinner Prout and T. Bluett; Robin Vaughan. And then some “subject” offerings … Scientific; Country Houses; Town Scenes; Portraits; Music Prints; Northern Engravings. Then an interesting “Other” which includes … James Grove; the Hermit; Glover; Bishop Nixon; Political Cartoons etc.

    A delightful Australian School watercolour … a Woman Bathing by a Lake 32cm by 21cm. External frame dimensions. 50cm by 39cm. Lovely palette and a charming naivety.

    Matted and framed by upmarket London Picture Framers, Restorers and Guilder with their label on the back. Slight hints of age but still in very good condition.

    The artist date and location nicely noted lower left and right on the mat. Decorative lines drawn to mat with lovely choice of fill colouring.

    After reasonable research we have not come up with anything on the artist nor any obvious record in the Royal Navy.

    Nice Australian watercolour from the 1870’s – Artist named but little known about him.

    Original hand-coloured engraving of the Short Eared Owl by Johann Conrad Susemihl (1767-1847).

    Published in Stuttgart as part of “Vogel Europas”, one of the great ornithological works of the 19th century, in which Johann Susemihl was assisted by his son Eduard.

    Size 25cm by 16cm .. will frame nicely for library, study, hallway …

    Australian Frogmouths – Broinowski – 1890

    An original hand finished chromolithograph from Broinowksi’s magnificent wok on Australian birds published late in the Victorian era.

    Two frogmouths … Podargus Strigoides (Tawny Frogmouth) an Podargus Plumiferus (Marbled Frogmouth). With moderate gum arabic highlights on the eyes, beaks and wing tips.

    Matted nicely ready to frame. Printed area 31cm by 24cm. external mat dimensions 43cm by 34cm. A nice example of the desirable frogmouth image … easier to see here than out in the bush.

    Price unframed but nicely matted as described. Our scanner is too small to show the full effect of the matting … its nice … double matted with French lines coloured and gilt.

    Engraved in copper by Thomas Shaw (1694-1751) and published as part of “Travels or Observations relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant”.

    Printed and published at “The Theatre’ Oxford.

    Presented matted, ready to frame, 40cm by 30cm. Engraving in excellent condition.

    The birds are the Hou-baara, Rhaad, Boo-ank and the Kittanria. We understand one of them is the Arabian Bustard and another a Willow Ptarmigan but we prefer there native names.

    Fine bird engraving 280 years old.

    Original and striking hand-coloured copper engraving of a Northern Harrier by Johann Conrad Susemihl (1767-1847).

    Published in Darmmstadt as part of a progressive work “Teutsche Ornithologie oder Naturgeschichte … between 1797 and 1810.

    The execution of this massive work was a family affair with Johann being assisted by his children Eduard and Emilie and his brother Johann Theodor. The superior quality and scale of these engravings makes them highly sought after.

    Paper size 50cm by 34cm … the engraved impression is 34cm by 25cm …
