The first publication of the private journal purchased by the Mitchell Library from the King family in 1933. The journal of his time at Norfolk Island and New Zealand has an immediacy lacking other accounts

Tuckey’s Voyage (to Port Philip) – an abridgement 1805

An abridgement of the 239 pages “An account of a Voyage to establish a Colony at Port Philip, in Bass’s Strait, on the south coast of New South Wales, in his majesty’s ship Calcutta, in the years 1802-3-4, by J. H. Tuckey Esq First Lieutenant of the Calcutta” – Longman & Co, London.

20 pages in simple blue sugar paper wrappers. Refer Ferguson bibliography of Australia, 410 and copy in the National Library Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK1729.

Much of the twenty pages is taken up by the voyage out but the arrival at Port Philip and the difficulties and hostilities encountered with the local aboriginal group are written up in detail and give a good understanding as to why the site was abandoned for the Derwent.

Some Early Records of the Macarthurs of Camden – Edited by Sibella Macarthur Onslow – 1914

A first edition published by Angus and Robertson, Sydney in 1914. Royal octavo, 496 pages with illustrations and foldout facsimile documents. Some edge foxing but overall a very good copy in a nice firm binding with coloured frontispiece.

This comprehensive record is based on papers by the authors father James Macarthur. She dedicated the book to her father and mother (Emily) and her uncle Sir William Macarthur.

This is a family that stood up to its adopted motto “Fide et Opera” – “Faith and Work”

The Contented Botanist – Sophie Ducker

Published in 1988 by Melbourne University at the Miegunyah Press and produced to their usual exceptional standard. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.

Unusual and important work. William Harvey (1811-1886) was one of the great Victorian Botanist. He travelled the Pacific and produced and book on Australian flora Phycologia Australica. He knew Hooker and Professor Asa Gray and corresponded with them. His visits to Australia included meeting the convicts at Port Arthur. This work based on his letters and paper unearthed at the Harvard University herbarium is brilliantly put together by the exceptional Sophie Ducker.
