Hafed – Prince of Persia – Duguid and Nisbet

A sixth edition published in London by Foulsham and Glasgow by Nisbet in 1923. Original green cloth binding, a substantial book of 579 pages, a clean copy with a religious picture pasted in at the rear and with manuscript reference notes to the text inside back cover. A very good copy.

The lengthy title page explains … His Experiences in Earth-Life and Spirit-Life being Spirit Communications received through Mr David Duguid, the Glasgow Trance Painting Medium, with an Appendix, containing Communications from Spirit Artists, Ruisadal and Steen. Illustrated by fac-similes of various Drawings and Writings the Direct Work of the Spirits

Originally published in 1876, taken down in notes by the publisher Hay Nisbet, and representing Duguid’s famous guide “Hafed”. Dictated in 46 sittings between 1870 and 1871. The climax of his story was reached when he revealed that he conducted the expedition of the Three Wise Men to Judea to the cradle of Jesus. He was summoned by his guardian spirit to go on the journey with two brother magi and take rich gifts to the babe. He described the youthful years of Jesus that are not chronicled in the Gospels. According to his story, he travelled with Jesus in Persia, India, and many other countries and marvelled at the miracles the young child performed. After the martyrdom of Jesus he became a Christian himself, met Paul in Athens, preached the gospel in Venice and Alexandria, and finally perished at age 100 in the arena at Rome.

The Cruise of the Marchesa – Guillemard (engravings by Whymper) -1889

Published by John Murray, London 1889.

The magnificent account of the voyage of the schooner yacht Marchesa from Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1881 first to Ceylon, then via Singapore to Formosa and the Liu-Kiu islands to Japan. She left Yokohama for Kamschatka returning three months later, thence to China and Hong Kong at the end of March 1883 from where the Sulu islands were explored and then the Celebes and on to New Guinea.

Many maps and special Whymper illustrations. One of the most interesting Victorian travel accounts. Very good condition.

Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922) was a Scottish physician who made important discoveries in parasitology and was the founder of the filed of tropical medicine. He discovered that filariasis in humans in transmitted by mosquitoes – his discovery directly invoked the mosquito-malaria theory

Nasal Notocanthus – Shaw and Nodder – 1802

An original and rather striking hand coloured copper engraving of the Notocanthus Nasus or Nasal Notocanthus. Described by Shaw as a having short prickles along the back and a nose-like snout. The genera Acanthonotus instituted by Dr Bloch. Inhabits the Indian Ocean and at the time of writing Shaw noted that “the history and manner (of the fish) are entirely unknown”

The Journal of The Royal Geographical Society 1931 October – Baluchistan – C.P. Skrine

A near mint copy of the October edition 1931 of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society London. The primary report is by Skrine on his travels and observations in Baluchistan mainly in the Highlands or Persian Baluchistan. Well illustrated with18 black and white photographs taken on the travels – some rather spectacular such as the “Earth Pillar” above Tamindan and the view of Kuh-i-Taftan from the cliffs of Lejwar. The report supported by a map of the Highlands region prepared by Skrine with an inset map of the broader Baluchistan.

This edition also includes one of the reports of Michael Terry relating to his travels in West Australia (Horseshoe Bend to Oodnadatta) also nicely illustrated with maps and photographs. As well as details of a 16th century manuscript navigating manual in the Society’s Library.
