An interesting little soft cover, only ever in this form. Published by Carlton, London in 2007.

Perfect bound 72 pages, illustrated throughout (naturally). Some introductory and concluding pages and in between .. Pacific; South America; North America; some Europe and Africa.

The variations, contrasts and similarities make this an interesting study even if you are not an advocate of the dye and needle.

Tattoos – a nice sounding and looking word, and steeped in cultural heritage worldwide

Easter Island – Earth Island – Bahn and Flenley

A high quality book published by Thames and Hudson, London in 1992, a first hardcover edition.

Large squarish octavo, 240 pages, over 200 illustrations from photographs, sketches of digs, designs, maps and charts etc. Nice bibliography. A fine copy.

They reference previous visits from Cook etc and then the scientific efforts of Katherine Routledge (Voyager Hero) in WWI and then Thor Heyerdahl who brought with him William Mulloy who would become the expert on the island and its past. Bahn and Flenley are a bit harsh with their criticism of Heyerdahl.

A super book and essential for any Easter Island enthusiast. We are going to dig out some work by Mulloy shortly.

Easter Island should be part of a tight collection.

First edition published by the ABC in 2006. Large octavo, 292 pages, nicely illustrated . A quality production printed in heavy paper. Neat name on end papers. A very good copy.

The book on La Perouse by John Dunmore a recognised world authority on La Perouse and many things Pacific.

From his teenage life at war, the American War, issues in the Indian Ocean and the Great tragic Voyage and “the Mystery”.

The Happy Isles of Oceania (Paddling the Pacific) – Paul Theroux

Value for money, the best modern book by far on the western Pacific – Oceania by the talented Theroux.

Published by Hamish Hamilton, London in 1992 a first edition. Thick octavo, 541 pages with maps at the end for those that are unfamiliar.

Seemingly Theroux was encouraged to visit the Trobriand Islands by Malinowski’s “the Sexual Life of Savages” a ground breaking and “’writer’s taboo” breaking work from the esteemed anthropologist.

All of this is after the Land of the Long White Cloud and before the paddle to Fifi and Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, Marquesas. Then straying east to Easter Island and up and back a bit to Hawaii and “Paradise” … and some others in-between.

Theroux throws his lot into the Pacific.

Albert Hahl – Governor in New Guinea – Edited and Translated by Sack and Clark

Albert Hahl (1868-1945) was the German Governor of New Guinea until relived through the consequences of WWI. This excellent book about his life and work in New Guinea was first published as “Gouverneursjahre” in Germany. This edition translated by Peter Sack and Dymphna Clark, published by ANU, Australia in 1980.

Octavo, 164 pages, illustrated from period photographs. The editors have added significant introductory content of 22 pages which must significantly enhance the original work. A glossary of the many German named organisations and institutions is included.

Includes maps of German New Guinea, Astrolabe Bay, Ponape and New Britain. Photographs of the survivors of the Ehlers Expedition, Ponape, Hotel Furst Bismark, Herbertshohe, Namanula etc hint at the contents.

A scarce book of an important story in the history of Papua New Guinea.

With a focus on the Central Pacific and up into the Arctic searching for the North-West Passage from the other side.
