Missing frontispiece and title page starting with dedication “to Samuel Pepys Esq Principal Officer of the Navy, Secretary to the Admiralty, Fellow of the Royal Society and Brother of the Trinity-house of Deptford-Strand” … 271, 9 pp. Third edition 1674 (first 1659) corrected and enlarged. Set out as a series of six books with Appendix etc

The First Book being the first Rudiments of Astronomy and Geography or a Description of the Lines, Circles and other Parts of the Globes.

The Second Book Shewing the Practical Use of the Globes applying them to the Solution of Astronomical and Geographical Problems.

The Third Book Being the Practical Use of the Globes Applying to the Solution of Problems in the Art of Navigation.

The Fourth Book Shewing the Practical Use of the Globes Applying them to the Solution of Astrological Problemes.

The Fifth Book Shewing the Practical Use of the Globes Applying them to the Solution of Gnomonical Problemes.

The Sixth Book without and never had title on Trigonometrical Problemes

Followed by An Appendix shewing the Explanation and Use of the Ptolomaick Sphere. Followed by “Ancient Stories of the Several Stars and Constellations …. Collected by Dr Hood” and “a Discourse of the Antiquity, Progress and Augmentation of Astronomy” … A catalogue of Moxon’s published items and a useful index of each book.

Many illustrations, tables and mathematical explanations in the text including one of the first publications of the key elements of Kepler’s Rudolphine Tables showing data for extrapolation of the position of a number of stars between the years 1600 and 1700.

Victorian Fine Binding – Galatea: A Pastoral Romance – Miguel de Cervantes.

A literal translation from the Spanish (the first) by Gordon Willoughby James Gyll. Published by Bell and Dalby, London in 1867.

Originally published in 1588 before the much celebrated Don Quixote. Under the guise of pastoral characters, the book represents and examination of love. This edition 349 pages after preliminaries finely bound in full orange morocco, inner gilt dentelle with marbled endpapers by respected London Bookbinder of the period – Jeremiah Larkins. A very fine copy. A lovely gift.

About the bookbinder

Jeremiah Larkins (1833-1907) was of Irish descent. He became a bookbinder at the age of seventeen and soon had his own business first as a partnership and then under his own name. He married Ann who was described as a book-folder so they must have met through the business. He became highly respected for the quality of his work amongst the London book elite of the Victorian era.

The author was formerly a Lieutenant in the Rpyal Navy, and now a Minister in the Established Church

Published in London by James Nisbet of Oxford Street, 1816, a first edition.

A contemporary half leather binding. 12mo. 239 pages. Green leather spine and corners over marbled boards. Corners lightly rubbed and scuffed but nicely presented and tightly bound. Spine with 5 raised bands with blind-stamp decorated compartments and original red leather title label. Clean text throughout. A very good copy of this scarce book especially the 1816 edition.

Marks, Richard (1778–1847) was born in 1778 at North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Marks. Enlisting in the wartime navy in 1797, he found a ready outlet for a self-described partiality for water, gunpowder, and ‘deeds of dangerous enterprise. Here he recalls how he immediately immersed himself in the opportunities for ‘unabated licentiousness’ of contemporary shipboard life, ‘the broad road of destruction, loud in blasphemy, and ever ready to burlesque the Holy Scriptures’. Two narrow escapes from shipwreck in successive ships seemed only to confirm him in a life he openly describes as deliberate rebellion against God. After returning to England in 1810, following thirteen years of unrelenting sea service, Marks relinquished prospects of further advancement in the navy in order to follow an inner call to the ministry. He was admitted to Magdalene College, Cambridge and in 1813 he was ordained as a priest. He gave up his naval half pay, and served an initial seven-year curacy in a remote village parish. From 1820, following these ‘wilderness years’, as he later called them, he ministered for the remaining quarter century of his active life among ‘the humble cottagers’ of Buckinghamshire, as vicar of Great Missenden

Poems by Charles Kingsley – 1884 – Superb Fine Binding Deep Blue Leather

Published by Macmillan. London in 1884 and bound in deep blue polished calf with five raised bands to spine separate red leather title label and elaborate gilt work to each compartment, gilt outline to boards, marbled endpapers and edges etc – really nice.

Charles Kingsley was a priest in the Church of England. A friend of Darwin and early supporter of the theory of evolution (Darwin mentions his view in later editions). Author of the Water Babies and Westward Ho and a collection of beautiful poems, songs and ballads beautifully presented here.
