The Aboriginal / Settler Clash in Van Diemen’s Land 1803-1831 – N.J.B. Plomley

Published in 1992 by the Queen Victoria Museum, Launceston, where Plomley was at the time an Honorary Research Assistant and the University of Tasmania. Described as their “Occasional Paper No 6”. Very hard to find a copy.

Printed internally on what A4 sized paper, one hundred pages, staple bound, binder’s tape, cream heavy card covers, image to front on a conflict ex Bonwick. Fine and clean.

The structure of the work is interesting, twenty-six pages of narrative, bibliography, tables of Aboriginal population, rather sad graphs of the decline and the level of incidents which peaked in 1830, numerous maps of Tasmania showing the location of clashes and a lengthy table of the nature of those clashed.

Sobering history not to be ignored …

A high quality facsimile of the exceedingly rare 1823 original. This published by the Tasmanian Government in 1990. A limited numbered edition of 500 copies this number 382.

Octavo, 90 pages, plus appendices. Large folding map and folding frontispiece view oof early Hobart.

Contains every bit of information that could be of assistance to anyone desiring to settle in Van Diemen’s Land. Interestingly, it also enclosed a blank application form for FREE GRANTS OF LAND … can you imagine the interest.

Bound nicely in half leather over suede covered boards, gilt title front and spine. A fine copy.

Sketch of the History of Van Diemen’s Land – James Bischoff

Originally published by John Richardson, London, 1832. This is from Australiana Facsimile Editions published in Adelaide in 1967. A scarce edition of this series maybe not as mainstream as some of the others.

First in this form 260 pages including the appendices, large folding coloured map by John Arrowsmith, frontispiece and one other plate, both also by Arrowsmith, of the Van Diemen’s Land Company’s establishments at Circular Head and Emu Bay.

Original faux leather binding, gilt titles to spine, very clean, large folding map in super condition. The map is far far too big to scan on our A3 scanner so we have just done a bit of unfolded bit so you can see the quality.

An important book which Bischoff intended for distribution to the Van Diemen’s Land Company shareholders and to encourage potential investors. In it he reprints several of the Company’s yearly reports, including the important third report of 1828, and in full the exploration journals of Alexander Goldie, Henry Hellyer and Joseph Fossey, which were included in an appendix to the third report. An important appendix includes Lt-Governor Arthur’s dispatches on the Aborigines and their growing resistance to the European settlement

A Roebuck (After Dampier) Society publication of 1973.

Small quarto, 103 pages, end paper maps, illustrated nicely. A very good copy.

Cumpston’s well researched account of the opening up of the Bass Strait.

Two parts – The Furneaux Group which starts quite naturally with Captain Furneaux in the Adventure on his own away from Cook for a while. Part two about King Island with Robert Campbell and John Palmer before Flinders and his thorough approach. And then the French and the fright they put into Governor King and the various hoisting of flags that followed.

Effectively self-published by the authors, Hobart in 1979. Only edition limited to 1,000 copies.

A really super history so specific to the North-East of Tasmania an area rather neglected by historical writers and it shouldn’t be …

Quarto, vii and 106 pages, end paper maps, loads of interesting illustrations mainly from period photographs. A nice production in very good condition.

Starts with early European exploration and the sealers. Settlers and the hostilities and then the “gold” and the numerous rushes and mines and false alarms .. super stuff. The Chinese involvement and then eventually the decline of some townships as mining prospects became more realistic.

One of our favourite Tasmanian historical accounts … the neglected North East
