A first edition published by Angus and Robertson, Sydney in 1954. Octavo, 268 pages, many illustrations, great condition albeit small piece missing from free end paper. Dust jacket to die for.

This is Simpson’s fourth book and third non-fiction work, and the second time in New Guinea.

An often overlooked account of the Wahgi Valley, an astonishing place, so immense in New Guinea. And, the Leahy brothers who following an expedition set out to live among, exploit and integrate (they certainly did that) with the local people.

Very nicely illustrated with some quite special images … we particularly like the Wahgi man brandishing his stone axe at Jim Taylor … some passion there.

A substantial book published by Allen & Unwin in 1997. Signed and dated by the author on the title likely at the official book launch given the date.

Quarto, 593 pages, illustrated throughout. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. A heavy book that may require a significant Overseas supplement.

ANARE started with the planting of a flag at Atlas Cove on Heard Island on Boxing Day 1947. It was down to Tim Bowden to write this superior record of what was to come. It took him four years – just as well he started early!

A straight forward Forward by the great Phillip Law leads into other useful preliminaries (including a healthy listing of acronyms which litter Antarctic going on) before a chronological history taking us from the Beginning at Heard then Macquarie and the push further south. To the exploration era (1954-1966) and “filling in the map”. Some difficult times for ANARE in the late sixties and seventies before a change to its modern progressive format. The final pages list Wintering Expeditioners; Medal Winners and Voyage Leaders. Useful obligatory bibliography.

Bowden’s even bigger work on the Australian’s in Antarctica – Signed nicely.

Original hand coloured stipple engraving. Good strong clean example with excellent bright original colouring. The stipple effect is striking. 32cm by 24 cm, strong laid paper, very good condition with a few innocent marks.

Engraved by J Milbert Lambert after a drawing by Nicholas-Martin Petit, official artist on the Baudin expedition. Published at Paris by Bertrand as part of the most beautifully illustrated of the great voyages – Voyages of Discoveries in Terra Australia.

Original Chart of New South Wales or the East Coast of New Holland, discovered by Lieutenant James Cook, Commander of H.M. Bark, Endeavour -1770

The French version – “Carte de la Nle. Galles Meridle. ou de la cote orientale de la Nle. Hollande, decouverte et visitee par le Lieutenant J. Cook, Commandant de L’Endeavour, vassieu de sa Majeste en 1770

Original copperplate engraving by distinguished cartographer Robert Benard recording Cook’s navigational records, published in Paris circa 1774. Large format 77cm by 36cm, original folds, coloured in outline.

On his first of three voyages James Cook discovered and charted the East Coast of Australia for the first time and this chart resulted from that work. There are many interesting features including Mt Warning, the Glass House Mountains (named as such because they reminded Cook of the view of the coastal Glass Kilns as seen from the water in the South West of England) and the record of the grounding on the reef of Cape Tribulation before recovering the vessel in the Endeavour River in the Far North.

The Malay Archipelago -The Land of the Orang-Utan and the Bird of Paradise, with Studies of Man and Nature – Alfred Russel Wallace

Wallace’s great book dedicated to Charles Darwin. Beautifully written. An early fourth edition published by Macmillan in 1872. Nevertheless scarce and sought after.

Octavo, 653 pages. Re-cased at some time with the spine and front laid down; with the desired Orang-utan gilt device retained on front and similarly bird of paradise retained on front. Some marks near front but generally in good condition. Priced to condition for a scarce desirable item.

Wallace collected over 125,000 specimens identifying thousands of new species during this expedition. This book represents the backbone of his discoveries (The Wallace line) that supports the “Origin of Species”. Well illustrated with maps and engravings

Narzinge and Ceylon Petrus Bertius – Published 1610

An original copper engraved miniature map of Southern India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). One of the earliest maps of the region.

This map was originally drawn by Barent Langenes and published by him at Middleburg and as part of Petrus Bertius’ Caert-Thresoor in 1598.

Bertius continued to include this map in his most successful “Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum Libri” published by Cornelis Claesz in Amsterdam. This example comes from the 1603 edition of “Tabularum”.

It is rather scarce. Here uncoloured, as it should be 85mm by 122mm. Very good condition, any darkening of the paper exaggerated by the scan.

Petrus Bertius (1565-1629) was born the son of a Flemish minister a Baveren, Flanders. He became a religious refugee and moved and settled in Amsterdam. In 1577. After finishing his studies he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Leiden. He became a prolific writer on mathematics, history and theology. He also gained renown as a geographer and publisher of magnificent atlases. Later in life, in 1618 he became cosmographer and historiographer to Louis XIII of France. He died in Paris in 1629
