    An original and rather striking hand coloured copper engraving of the Notocanthus Nasus or Nasal Notocanthus. Described by Shaw as a having short prickles along the back and a nose-like snout. The genera Acanthonotus instituted by Dr Bloch. Inhabits the Indian Ocean and at the time of writing Shaw noted that “the history and manner (of the fish) are entirely unknown”

    Clowded Owl by Shaw & Nodder – c1790

    A rare and striking hand coloured copper engraving of the Clouded Owl (Strix Nebulosa) by Shaw & Nodder published in London c1790

    Described by the Natural History Museum, London as alternatively the Great Grey Owl, Ghost Owl or Lapland Owl and as endangered. Not sure though as other sources appear to contradict and say the Strix Nebulosa are not in any difficulty .. we very much hope so as it’s a lovely Owly owl.

    George Shaw was in charge of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. Nodder was a natural history artist and worked for Banks on his Florilegium.

    Framed in gilt within cream mat board dimensions 36cms x 30cms.

    Original narrative by Sir Frederick Chapman. Here presented edited with an introduction, notes and commentary by noted historian George Mackaness. Published in 1962 this soft covered collectable was limited issue of only 200 copies all signed and numbered by Mackaness. This copy being number 11 nicely signed and complete as original.

    Sir Frederick Chapman’s family knew Phillip in his later years – Mackaness uncovered previously unpublished material which adds to his usual well researched offering.
