The Dramatick Works of the late Sir Richard Steele. The Conscientious Lover. The Funeral. The Tender Husband. The Lying Lover [Four Editions bound as One] – Sir Richard Steele c1733

Short Description

Published by Feales at Rowe’s Head, over against Clement’s Inn Gate, London circa 1733. Duodecimo, bound in contemporary quarter calf with marbled papered boards. Spine with raised bands and ruled in gilt, separate red leather title label “Play”. Engraving including frontispiece of Steele engraved by Virtue. Rubbed and jostled, but a very sound and nicely presented copy.

First collected edition od Steele’s plays published separately and dated 1730, 1731, 1732 and 1733.

With the contemporary bookplate of Joseph Pickford (1734-1782) the well respected Derbyshire architect and friend of Josiah Wedgewood and Matthew Boulton.

Also carries the 20thC book label of Peter Scupham, a noted poet who restored a Norfolk Elizabethan Manor to put on plays (maybe Steele’s Dramatick Works) and also ran a distinguished Morris style Press and ran an antiquarian bookstore … all splendid vocations.

Humorous plays that could fit the modern bill. After the Conscientious [which we would aspire] the bad one and the Husband before the ever familiar “Lying Lover”.

Lying or Dead the “Conscientious” one is for aspiration.
