Georges Barbier “Fantouches” -1928
Short Description
A stunning original pochoir by George Barbier (1882-1932) created and published to illustrate Fetes Galantes and the beautiful poetry of Paul Verlaine (1844-1896).
Paul Verlaine described as a decadent and symbolic poet was famously shot by Arthur Rimbaud during their tempestuous relationship between 1871-1875.
The image represents the poem “Fantoches” and shows Scaramouche and Pulcinella, drawn together by evil intent, silhouetted against the full moon. The Bologna Doctor is seen picking herbs from the garden. His beautiful daughter naked meets her handsome pirate … grief is symbolised by the nightingale,
